Law Personal Statement Example

Peace, impartiality and freedom, to me, are what the law provides. It is not just a set of rules, but a means of addressing pressing issues in our overall society, whether it's advocating for human rights, environmental protection, or economic fairness. I am intrigued by the dynamics of law, and this unwavering fascination to understand the reflections of law on society. Furthermore, I am eager to learn about how the law integrates codes of conduct into society.

I admire the book ‘Rule of Law’ by Lord Tom Bingham, who states ‘No civilised country should willingly tolerate such injustices’. From his personal experiences within the law and as a judge, he explores the idea that the law embodies unfaltering changes within the UK that adapt to these ideas that best suit the needs of that country. The idea of the ‘rule of law’ has been used by himself and many other judges as the basis of their subjectivity, this was already an established ‘constitutional principle’ and is not new as it has dated back to the Aristotle period and the first time, into the British parliamentary acts. Bingham exhorts the principle that the point of governance is to promote accountability and fairness regardless of class, gender and race.
Furthermore, a British philosopher; John Locke, reveals in his book, Second Treatise of Government, that the law acts as a third-party neutral arbiter to resolve conflict and bring peace and security within the country. He implores this idea, that the law provides society with true freedom with principles, and routines and improves our daily living standards. The ‘social contract theory’ made me cognizant of the idea of humanity establishing a natural law before it evolved into an organised social and political existence and the impact the law has on a cooperative society. John Locke's ideology and philosophy shaped the UK laws and still has an effect to this day. His theology inspires me to further understand the effects of laws, and how and why laws are so significant to stratum in society.

To expand my knowledge of law, I took an online course: ‘Making Political and Social Change’. This course helped me understand what it meant to be a citizen in the United Kingdom, and how it is possible to make active changes for causes. The course highlighted political change and social changes and what activism can be aided within this. I also had the opportunity to work at Once Upon a Time Nursery, my responsibilities were to aid the children throughout the day and supervise them during meal times. This job enabled me to be more proactive and better my time management to effectively help the children at the nursery. Partially, I worked as a private tutor for English and History this helped me develop a sense of responsibility as I was to ensure that the students I taught got the best grades possible. Participating in these roles inspired me to be enthusiastic and energetic about a sense of community and responsibility. It demonstrated how gratifying and rewarding a profession can be.

My academic trajectory has been defined by a rigorous and broad examination of topics that are central to law. My A-level subject; History expanded my capability with critical thinking and encouraged me to develop logical arguments. History intertwines with the law, as current legislation is on the basis of history and past court cases, this is reflected in the Equality Act 2010, which amalgamated several acts regarding discrimination into one singular act. History is always changing and has impacted the judicial president which interested me to pursue this as an A level. My A-level subject; Sociology fascinated me about the relationship between society and the application of law to it. Law entrails the social code of conduct into society and is an indirect way of social change and keeping order. My BTEC; Applied Law has given me insight into what is to be expected when studying law and has developed my skills in legal research and communications.
