Dentistry Personal Statement Example 11

My first memorable interaction with a dentist was when I was eight years old. I’d been playing in the school corridor during recess and had a pretty bad fall. I’d broken both my upper centrals and there was blood everywhere. If I had known what I know today after attending dental school, I wouldn’t have been so worried. In my juvenile mind, my imagination ran wild, and I believed I’d have to live with this disfigurement my entire life. Luckily, my trusty dentist came to the rescue. I’ve always been to I have a special smile. Thanks to my dentist and the composites he gave me, I was able to regain that feature and have never been ashamed to show pearly whites. That was the first time I became interested in dentistry. I have always been a very empathetic person and have wanted to help people in any way I could. Dentistry has helped me do that. I have been able to help relieve people’s pain and give them an esthetic smile.

Growing up, I came to meet a few more dentists. The characteristic that I observed mostly about each of them was that they all really loved and enjoyed their jobs. I am a very passionate person. So, seeing dentists being passionate about their work really compelled me. I’ve always believed that if you are passionate about your job, it won’t feel like work. I took special interest in endodontics from the when it was first introduced in my third year. I came to appreciate the beauty of well-filled root canal treatment on an x-ray. Working inside canals so small takes finesse. I took several courses in rotary endodontics, endodontic retreatment, and anterior composite to further enhance my dexterity. Whenever I have difficulty in a subject, I lookup videos on Youtube and check the library to help me fully grasp the topic.

During my time at school, I was able to attend different volunteer and extracurricular activities that I believe have helped me enhance my skills. Whilst playing basketball, I was able to develop teamwork and have a healthy sense of competition. Through drama class and taking part in the school plays, I was able to develop self-confidence and speak in front of large audiences. That particular skill came in handy during presentations at school and at our international conference in my senior year. As a hobby, I enjoy working with my hands, making arts and crafts. Dentistry is a scientific art form. An artistic flare is another skill I believe is necessary for a dentist. Through shadowing dentists in their clinics and working in both public and private sectors, I’ve been able to work on a large amount of patients with different ailments and coming from various economic backgrounds. This has enhanced my communication skills, as well as my expertise as an entry-level dentist.

Both my parents work in a hospital. In my spare time, I enjoy doing volunteer work in the hospital. I’ve spent time in the radiation department, learning about different scans and mapping out radiation for cancer patients. During that time, I was able to meet patients and interact with them closely. The subject of cancer affects me deeply. I have lost four family members to cancer, and even my mother battled cancer once before. Another subject that affected me deeply during my school years was the revolution. I was honored to be able to take part in such a historical event. During the protests, we felt like we could change the world. We were able to voice our opinions, defend the weak, and object injustices.

One of my favorite things to do is to spend time with my nieces and nephews. It’s like having my own little fan club. Together, we watch animes in Japanese with English subtitles, which has helped enhance my language skills. My siblings have no trouble leaving me with their kids. Even though I am the youngest, I’m thought of as being responsible and mature. My parents have long trusted me with their finances and the family business, as they work abroad.

In conclusion, I hope I can be a part of your esteemed school. I believe I can contribute and be an active member in your community.
