Aerospace Engineering Personal Statement
While other children fell asleep to the sound of their parents reading them bedtime fairytales, I was busy re-reading Ladybirds Explorer’s, “Flight” for probably the fourth time that day.
I’ve been enthralled by the concept of flight and aerodynamics ever since I was young. Breaking up my toys in order to build flying gadgets was part of my weekly routine; it upset my parents. They never had the heart to stop me after seeing my enthusiasm while in action. Growing up only enticed me more to machinery and how they work.
From RC Race cars to fighter jet models, I’ve disassembled and re-assembled them to my liking. Thus my unwavering will to pursue aerospace engineering is not merely a choice, but rather an ongoing childhood dream.
Living in a country where mechanical industries are isolated from the public, finding volunteer work related to that domain wasn’t easy; however, this didn’t stop me from looking. I tried extending my interest in Math and science beyond the classroom by calling almost every aviation organization within a 60 mile radius, but I either got rejected or ignored.
Despite the adversities, I chose to pursue my passion in aeronautics by taking the most challenging Math and Physics courses available at my school (IBDP Math and Physics HL). Doing so, I’ve managed to enhance my understanding in the dynamics of lift, thrust, and drag which provided me with a better understanding of the mechanics of flight.
Due to the lack of scientific activities at school, particularly those that pertain to engineering, I attempted to start the school’s first aviation club.
The plan was to educate members of the club about the components and mechanisms of a jet engine, and attempt to build a prototype throughout the academic year. The idea, however, wasn’t implemented due to students’ lack of interest and participation.
On a more social level, joining the school’s Model United Nations club was one of the best decisions that I’ve ever made. Being appointed the representative of the United States’ (Commission on Science and Technology for Development) CSTD at the national MUN conference only added to my passion for the sciences, and that’s why I worked diligently and won the “Most Persevering Delegate” award in my committee.
Furthermore, Arts play a great role in my life. I was able to enhance my knowledge in photography and film over the past few years. It all started with my joining the Photography and Cine-club at school, and what initially started as a co-curricular activity turned into a hobby, and later an ardor.
I’ve managed to put my skills to use at the senior prom; thus marking my first paid job as a high school senior. In addition, I’ve been volunteering at the Abu Dhabi Film Festival every October for the past 3 years. Not only do I admire the atmosphere of cameras and film, but I also love the notion of working under pressure; the more I have to juggle, the more capable I feel.
I’ve also managed to work on my piano skills, and found great pleasure in playing modern pieces such as Yiruma’s “River Flows in You” and Richard Clayderman’s “Marriage D’amour”, to name a few.
As the Arabic saying goes, “A healthy mind lies in a healthy body.” I believe that achieving well in school is correlated to staying fit, which makes swimming, cycling, and squash part of my weekly exercise routine. Moreover, I dedicate my time abroad to visiting local observatories and making the best out of the cultural diversities.
They say that being a university student isn’t a walk in the park, but by utilizing experiences and integrating them with your college life, I believe it can be.
By achieving the best balance between studies, fitness, and fun, I intend to explore the mesmerising fields of flight and space technology with as much focus and stamina as possible.
There is so much out there waiting to be discovered, and I will strive to be a part of the team which dives into the ocean of knowledge and returns bearing its pearls.
