Medicine Personal Statement Example 32

Over the years, I have often found myself intrigued by the sheer exquisiteness of the science of medicine.

It's truly admirable how the knowledge of human anatomy and physiology, together in a chemical context, can help people sustain a healthy life. Wanting to make the switch from an admirer, to a practitioner, I started my research into the field of medicine a few years ago.

My achievements and experiences so far have led me to believe that medicine is the right career option for me.

I was involved with Nepal Scouts from a very early stage where I got the opportunity to work as a community servant. Throughout my 5 years of scouting, I found myself working with the elderly and the disabled, usually helping them with their food and hygiene.

This helped me develop a sense of empathy and compassion. I also learnt first aid skills as a scout which was put to the test when I volunteered in an Inter School Karate Competition.

The two day tournament imposed different responsibilities and challenges on me but in the end, my contribution was highly appreciated. I was also able to realistically appreciate the stamina and resilience required to work as a health practitioner.

In my latter years of schooling in Nepal, I was appointed the treasurer of The Science Club. This involved managing the finances of the club and organising a wide variety of club programmes.

During my tenure at the club, I completed a four day "Training of Trainers" programme on Adolescent Health and Development organised by the club itself in association with W.H.O. and local authorities.

This was a fantastic opportunity for me to meet and talk to several doctors, regarding a career in medicine. I also met several obstetricians and gynaecologists, who gave me a further perspective of their own fields. The training itself dealt with various topics such as RTIs, STDs, stress, drugs, pregnancy and CPR.

In order to gain further insight into the realm of medicine, I shall be volunteering in a ward at a local hospital very soon. My duties will include assisting the nursing staff and the patients with their food and medication. I plan to continue with my volunteering in my gap year as well on a more regular basis. I shall also be using my gap year to make myself financially more secure before starting my degree.

Besides my interest in medicine and science, I enjoy sports such as cricket, football and Formula 1. I am fond of reading books too, especially by Dan Brown and Paulo Coelho.

I am also interested in creative writing of my own. I was a part of the student magazine team in my AS year where I contributed several articles. Back in Nepal, I was in the editorial team for the school yearbook.

I also represented the school in an International Literary Festival held in Lucknow, India. Listening to music, particularly rock and alternative, is another favourite pastime of mine. I occasionally try my hand on the guitar as well.

My scouting experience also included various outdoor activities such as camping and hiking which instilled character and self dependence in me. In my latter years of scouting, I was promoted to the post of a troop leader. This built up my confidence. My decision making and my leadership skills also blossomed.

More recently, I have been elected as a course representative in college. I shall be representing my course in the Student Union and making the voice of my fellow students heard, regarding issues about the course and the college.

I am aware of the challenges that lie ahead for anyone who chooses medicine as a degree. Along with outstanding academic abilities, one will also need tremendous physical and mental prowess to match the demands of medicine. As for me, I thrive on new challenges.

The willingness to gain new perspectives and knowledge, and a readiness to excel are an integral part of my personality. I am quite confident that my experiences and my qualities will help me match all those demands required for medicine.
