Personal Statement

As an introverted and self-effacing person, it is one of my dreams of having an Artificial Intelligence friend after watched Wall-E and Star Trek in childhood. My first “scratch” to computing was via Scratch, a block-based visual programming language developed by the MIT media lab. My I.T teacher taught me to use different function and design my first program. After school, I became obsessed with the software and downloaded it using my mother’s computer and building up my own little A.I friend who can only respond to “Hello” and “How are you.” Computer gives me the tool and knowledge to demonstrate my creativity and innovation.

From the day on, I become more and more addicted to computer. I managed and ran a New Year Fair Booth to sell my old toys for my Lego Mindstorm robot. In high school, I do homework for other classmates to earn money for my first desktop computer. Computer becomes an indispensable part of my life, and I strive for knowledge and opportunities to work in a related field as I believe it is the solution to improve human living quality (and help shy kid).

After secondary school, I studied Data Science XXX at the XXX University of Hong Kong, and I hope to learn more about combining A.I and Big Data. However, it is a tough time for me as I started to have emotional disorder and anxiety after entering university. These mental conditions disrupt my emotion, self-confidence, and ability to complete tasks at school. My academic performance deeply affected and started to decline and fluctuate. Thankfully, I meet a very professional and kind doctor to help me get through the sickness. I began to seek medical treatment and counselling since my Year 3. Similar to programming, resilience is essential as it will fail to debug many times before successful operation; developer needs to be humble and determined. So, during the treatment period, I learn to be resilient and search for opportunities and challenges outside my comfort zone.

For example, I joined The XXX University Department of computing’s project as a part-time student assistant. To help Hong Kong International Airport to optimize the baggage pickup and forecast landing time. I am also a research assistant of my university to assist in a project using Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality to help new generations artists exhibit their work on different electronic devices. I understand that practical skills and theory are equally crucial to success, and my anxiety condition improves and helps me get a “XXX”. Those experiences equip me with practical knowledge in research works, logical thinking, analytical skills and creativity to succeed on the course.

From 2019 semester two (January to May) to 2020 Semester two. The outbreak of COVID-19 causes the world to suffer a lot, especially Hong Kong people. After the Social movement, Hong Kong becomes an unstable environment to develop my career, both of the incidents influence the learning conditions and daily life a lot. Nonetheless, when the going gets tough, the tough get going. An I.T talent should always be self-motivated and self-learning, never stop the hunger from learning. Fortunately, the National Taiwan University offer me an offer to exchange in Taiwan in December. It was a wonderful overseas exchange experience, made me more globally aware and adaptable. Occasionally, after I received constructive advice from Taiwans’ professor and discussed with my Hong Kong friends who studied in Australia, I became aware of an alternative path to continue my enthusiasm for computer in Australia, an another chance.

On the other hand, my passion for technology has further developed on other hobbies. In the meantime, I enjoy reading books and magazine to widen my horizon. Photography and music is also my interest. It is vital that the programmer be capable of working individually and in teams as I also love stargazing and First Person View (FPV) drone team racing competition to overcome challenges together.

In the future, I am looking forward to having my Data Science master degree in Australia to strengthen my career path. The vista to develop my career in university exhilarates me. I fully appreciate the possibilities presented to me will be precious. And hope my passion for computer will bring me a better job horizon and equip all the criteria I need in the university
