University of Teesside review

If you're going to even think about Teesside University, then please, PLEASE come and visit first as it really isnt the kind of place everyone will like. Its rough and if you dont own a paul smith or ben sherman shirt, the club nights you may wish to attend could result in a trip to casualty.
The "alternative" student scene is not great - the scream pubs (of which there are three) are the closest you'll get to cool here but its still commercial and they wont offer you anything new or exciting.
On a more positive note. The uni cinema is top. It shows the kind of foriegn, arty and unusual films you hear of but never see in cinemas. The purple onion has a nice smooth jazz bar type thing going on if you're into that sort of thing and the cornerhouse, despite being a bit trendy and/or crap at times has a great night scene all its own.
The Uni campus itself is amusing - you've got southfield road in the centre with pubs etc and south of it is the modern learning resource centre (lrc) - basically its the library to those of us who are in the know, the union, the cool looking health building where all the nurses hang out and a building site which is going to be some kind of state of the art sports facility. North of Southfield Road, theres a chunk of uni buildings left over from the 1970s which just looks like your stereotypical university. The teaching (in the media dep.) is ok, but the tutors are NOT generally approachable and the work is structured in such a way that you end up with LOADS of deadlines at the end of each semester, which WILL result in the most stressful three weeks of your life, no matter how much you plan to prepare.
Its not a bad uni, but Middlesbrough is a pit and the students union is as cheesy as your socks will be by the end of your third year. Its great for sport though - there are loads of teams and stuff to do, but if you're anything like me and cant be arsed with that kind of thing, the uni will probably bore the hell out of you.
Computing is strong here apparently (according to practically everyone i've spoken to)...
Its a trendy uni and theres not a scholarly person in sight. Its nice to be away from the rars you see at places like oxford and durham etc, but its a dull place and its dangerous. Crime is a big concern and I've gone on long enough.
