Motorsport Engineering Personal Statement Example 3

From a very young age, I have had aspirations of becoming an engineer, because I wanted to follow my passion of motorsport and make my mark in the development of the automotive world.

For the first time in my life I have the opportunity to take my first steps towards a successful career. My curiosity began when I was quite young. I used to love the speed of Formula One cars and I remember being in sheer awe of them every race weekend.

Since then I have completely immersed myself into the world of Formula 1 and the engineering behind it. Currently, the Mercedes F1 W05 Hybrid is a triumph of Formula 1 engineering.

Its beauty, complexity, and intricacy has led to record breaking success, producing a phenomenal machine, and it has motivated me to pursue a career in engineering to learn more about the subject of mechanical engineering.

I began to investigate into how the world of motorsport functioned and I soon discovered that engineering was the area in which I wanted to devote my life to. My main interests in engineering lie with mechanical engineering, stemming from my enthusiasm for cars and an absolute passion that I have for motorsport.

In the past few years I have immersed myself in the world of mechanical engineering. I began to ask questions like "How does a 1.6 litre V6 Hybrid-Turbo engine work, and how can it be improved?" and "How do the E.R.S. and M.G.U.H. systems function?" It is questions like these which capture my interest in engineering.

The more I questioned and learned about mechanical engineering, the more intrigued and assured I became that a career in engineering was most suited for me. As I went further into the world of engineering through research, I began to investigate the difficulties that modern day engineers come across in motorsport.

Things such as fluid mechanics, pneumatic and desmodromic valve control systems, dry-sump lubrication systems, volumetric efficiencies and hydraulics. I was fascinated by how they worked.

These were very interesting concepts and they have further pushed me towards studying motorsport engineering to better understand these systems.

With this goal in mind, I have pushed myself to my limits and beyond in trying to make my vision a reality.

In the modern world, I am aware that a first-class engineer needs to have excellent teamwork spirit, technical competence, a profound ability to work under pressure, and have great leadership skills. Therefore last year, I decided to lay down the basic foundations of my career and I chose to take up the "F1 In Schools challenge" outside my curricular activities.

I was the team manager and design engineer in my schools team. This was an invaluable experience for me and I learned a lot from the project.

As a result of taking part in this competition, I believe I have further improved my leadership and communication skills tremendously whilst working with the team, and I have gained confidence in using C.F.D. systems when I designed our car. I feel that the skills reflected from this project are vital for a complete engineer.

My subject choices have also greatly improved my skills in this area. From studying mathematics and physics I have improved in how I tackle and solve problems logically. Also from studying physics and chemistry I have enhanced my ability to research and analyse data.

On completion of my degree, I plan on seeking employment in Formula 1. With my passion for engineering and motorsport along with my attitude toward learning and research, I believe this will enable me to achieve these goals. I believe I possess the essential skills, capacity and motivation to tackle the challenges that lie ahead of me.

I'm looking forward to experiencing university life - not only for the social experience but also the ability to explore subjects in which I am eager to gain knowledge in. Lastly, I hope that the degree I pursue from your university will enable me to achieve my aspirations on my journey to becoming a complete engineer.
