Communication Design Personal Statement Example

What comes to mind when you hear the word design, do you think of artistic advertisements? Eye-grabbing graphics on websites? Stunningly arranged spreads in magazines? While these examples cover the details and intricacies of the entire graphic design field, it doesn’t paint the full picture, the term encompasses a lot: posters, infographics, book covers, product labels, logos, business cards, signs, website layouts, mobile apps, software interfaces etc..

Design generally plays a crucial role in the modern competitive business world. It is more than just aesthetics. Through the manipulation of typography, images, shapes and colors, one is bestowed with the mightiest of abilities; the ability to ignite curiosity, attract, inform, educate, convey complicated information in a digestible way through infographics, develop an identity for businesses through branding, among other things.

The Apple logo originally designed by Rob Janoff back in 1977 is a prime example of how design can be used to develop an identity for businesses. Although it’s been tweaked, the basic form has remained the same ever since – a testament to its simplicity and longevity

Every day, we take many of the subtly artistic things around us for granted. But hidden in every magazine corner, exit sign or textbook lies a set of design ideas that influence our perceptions,” says Jacob Smith, founder of illustration studio ProductViz.

It’s also important to remember that although many graphic design projects have commercial purposes like advertisements and logos, it is also used in other contexts and graphic design work is often created purely as a means for artistic expression.

I am fascinated by the artistic elements expressed throughout the spectrum of design and have taken interest in the characterization of digital images.

What I find compelling about design is that it enables designers to challenge society's attitudes/norms and it allows the voices of the silenced, oppressed and the marginalized to speak and echo through time.

Studying Design Communication at A-level has encouraged me to explore the different aspects of Design which assemble foreign worlds/concepts for me to immerse myself in and deconstruct piece by piece. The study of design has enabled me to improve my design and communication skills and has allowed me to contribute my quota in ensuring society becomes a better place.

The skills I have attained through the study of Design have enabled me to excel in other subjects such as volunteering and mentorship which both require me to evaluate and discuss design in great detail.
Applying for an Communication Design at your university will facilitate me in achieving my goals as I aspire to pursue a career in Graphic Design
