Physiology Personal Statement Example

My ambition is to work as a Medical Physiologist. My passion for the subject developed during the Physiology and Anatomy module of the YMCA Fitness and Instructing course I am currently taking at Luton Sixth Form College. Since the start of the course I have had an increasing interest in the way the body works, the different bodily systems and how to prevent, cure and treat illnesses and injuries. A significant reason for me choosing to take Medical Physiology is because I am keen on promoting good health and fitness and it is something I am very interested to learn more about.

As a regular gym goer and having undertaken significant independent research, I believe I have considerable knowledge on health and fitness that would be beneficial in starting a Physiology degree and aid me in completing it. Cell biology, biomechanics and the structure and functions of biological systems fascinate me and I am eager to learn more about them throughout the course.

I believe a career in Physiology would be suitable for me as I would love to be able to help people in a hospital or a clinic to recover from musculoskeletal injuries and understand functions of the human body, at the whole organism, cellular and molecular levels. I have learned that such a career is highly rewarding and offers similar job satisfaction to a doctor, in that you feel good about helping and treating people to recover from injuries. Being able to study for a degree in Physiology would give me the skills and knowledge required to become a Physiologist where I am certain I will be very satisfied with the tasks it includes. Although I do not currently possess work experience in Physiology, I would be keen to have a work placement either in the UK or abroad in my third year of the course to help me develop the skills and knowledge a Physiologist requires and to be able to learn what a career as a Physiologist would be like on a day to day basis. My work experiences so far, cover working in an office in London for a Construction Management company, which helped me to build my confidence and communication skills which are undoubtedly vital for a Physiologist as well as to be successful throughout university. I think the foundation course would be most appropriate for me as starting the course in this way would increase my knowledge sufficiently to enable me to begin the course with greater confidence and familiarity of the subject.

In June 2015 I went to Malawi on a charity project with my College, where I spent time at an orphanage and a girl's primary school. At the school I chose to teach maths and basic health which included teaching about the brain, heart, muscles and bone structures. During our stay we visited a hospital were I was able to compare hospitals in a third world country to those in the UK and see what it would be like working there; which I feel would be a possibility for me at some point in my life. The trip was an extremely rewarding and unforgettable experience which I hope to repeat in the future. I am currently working part time at a restaurant and at my local gym where I work as an Ambassador. Working at these places has enabled me to enhance my communication skills immensely as conversing with colleagues, managers and customers is essential in both jobs. After recently taking up tutoring Maths at key stage two level I have noticed an increase in my productivity and organisational levels.

In August 2014 I took part in NCS where I developed strong teamwork and leadership skills. I feel that I have the ideal skills, qualities and potential to excel at University on the Medical Physiology degree.
