Chemical Engineering Personal Statement Example 11

Whilst at a local canal festival, I saw a hydrogen powered barge which intrigued me. I thought that this was my first experience of chemical engineering, until I researched what this field encompassed. I soon realised that engineering was all around me.

At the University of Birmingham's open day, I investigated hydrogen fuel technology and how fuel cells work in appliances such as cars; I think we could really benefit from this technology and develop many new ways of integrating this kind of power into our lives.

I am particularly interested in studying fluid mechanics and thermodynamics as they are unlike the topics I have studied at A level due to the content and depth. I am also looking forward to expanding my knowledge of advanced mathematics and strength of materials as these are both currently briefly covered in my studies and further reading.

Having recently read "Beyond the Molecular Frontier: Challenges for Chemistry and Chemical Engineering", I have discovered what an imperative role chemists and chemical engineers play in industry. During Easter of Year 12 I went to Loughborough University for the Engineering Experience where I looked at several engineering disciplines such as chemical, civil and mechanical.

I found many links to the topics I have already studied during my A levels in Physics, Chemistry, and, Maths. I have since attended several lectures on Chemistry and Physics at the University of Birmingham which were useful to identify which areas of the subjects I was most interested in.

My Extended Project is on how and why skis have developed since the 1800s and looks into the different materials used and the different factors that have affected this progression. I believe that this will be beneficial to my undergraduate studies as the style of working is very similar as well as the topic being related to strength of materials.

Over the past year, in my role as school charity representative I have organised events such as cake sales and a disco to raise money for the school charities; this has further broadened my creativity and organisation which are paramount to undergraduate study. With this role I learned how to work as part of a team and how to run events effectively.

I have been re-elected for this position for the coming year and I already have an event being prepared. I have mentored in Maths, Chemistry and Biology and since being appointed the role of physics prefect, I have been given the opportunity to help with Key Stage Four lessons which further improves my understanding whilst also developing my confidence and communication further.

I have completed both the Bronze and Silver Duke of Edinburgh Awards and I am currently working towards my Gold award which I should have completed by the end of this year.

I was thrilled to have completed my Residential in Ethiopia last year as part of a World Challenge Expedition, this was particularly difficult as I had to put myself out of my comfort zone every day and solve every problem that arose to the best of my ability. An example of this is when the team had to walk across an unfinished bridge whilst being surrounded by the villagers in the dark.

I believe that this high pressure experience of problem solving will be very beneficial to have as an undergraduate studying Chemical Engineering. In my spare time I am an active member of the Army Cadets which I thoroughly enjoy. Cadets helps me to work on my leadership skills whilst also working as part of a team.

I have skied from the age of 3 and progressed very well to be an advanced skier, I would love to continue this hobby at university. My ultimate goal is to attain Chartered status with a PhD.

A degree in Chemical Engineering is the first step to enable me to fulfil this. Knowledge is something I have always held dear to me and that thirst for knowledge is something I believe I will want to build upon throughout my life, university is a key component in that quest.
