Computer Science Personal Statement Example 35

I am looking to pursuit a career in computing, in particular software engineering. Since an early age I became fascinated with computers and the way they are used.

My Uncle inspired me to experiment with computers working from Windows 3.11 upwards. During my time at middle school I became a close friend with the Head of ICT, who let me spend time inside the computer labs working on everything from improving security to building a new intranet. This gave me a good taste of what IT is like in the industry.

I am currently at 6th Form at Stratton Upper School where I am studying IT BTec Certificate and Systems & Control A-Level.

In my spare time I am working on new computing problems such as Linux, C++ Programming and Large-Scale Databases.

I find this interesting as it helps me to develop an understanding on everyday computing. I have spoken to several companies to research the best route to take into the industry, these companies outlined university as a brilliant way to learn the essentials along with specialising into a certain field.

I also have strong interests in Music, mainly Rock. I have put together a team of other students who are all interested in organising local concerts and have already completed two of these. I also take part in many extra-curriculum activities such as Adult Sports Leadership Award, Peer Mentoring and Youth Work. I am hoping to continue my interest in university using extra-curriculum activities.

For work experience I have spent time at the BBC working on the dynamic pages including parts of CBBC and CBeebies. These were all built in Perl and Javascript.

I currently work at Homebase in my local town, working with customers on the refund desk, in the cash office and am the main point of call when anything computer based needs fixing.

My future aspirations are to work for a large organisation either working on Database Driven Websites (mainly using PHP & MySQL) or Networking on a large scale.

I would like to develop my skills at university to enable me to do this. I would put in 100% as I understand you get everything out of university that you put in.
