Computing Personal Statement Example 9

Computers have always fascinated me. From my very first desktop PC to my current laptop, I have always had the desire to know more about how they work, why they work and more importantly, what could I do to improve them. One area of computing that particularly interests me is video gaming.

Everything from Artificial Intelligence to Physics Engines intrigues me and leaves me wanting an explanation. Playing computer games has always made me want to make something similar and to be involved in providing people with enjoyment when playing a game, knowing that I took part in producing it, would be an incredible feeling.

This degree will allow me to develop my skills, allowing me to learn more about subject that is constantly being advanced.

My A-levels have all helped to develop both myself and the way I work. Biology and Physics have both improved my analytical and evaluative skills. They have taught me how to be proficient in handling complex data, which is an invaluable skill to have in computing.

Maths made me realise that getting one line of calculations wrong, can completely alter the outcome and this is the same when writing computer programmes. This has shown me the importance of checking each line thoroughly for mistakes, which is critical in computing.

Completing a work experience placement while at college in a local primary school was a challenging experience. My main responsibilities included helping students with their written work and reading, and assisting teachers with their everyday tasks. I learnt many transferable skills at my placement.

The importance of being able to work using my own initiative was vital, as was working as part of a team, supporting others. My time management skills were enhanced and I gained communication skills ranging from dealing with small children to adults.

I have worked for a local small computer company, and during this time I was often left to work on my own, troubleshooting and fixing computers, whilst my colleague worked on the shop floor. I had to work using my own initiative and prioritise my workload, to ensure all tasks were completed on time.

My present job as a customer assistant at a leading supermarket means the majority of my time is spent helping customers on a one-to-one basis. Ensuring the customer gets exactly what they want means that my communication and social skills have been greatly improved.

In my spare time I like to read, with genres ranging from horror to scientific non-fiction. I am an avid cricket fan, and from the age of nine up until my late teens I played for my village cricket team. Keeping fit is important to me and I regularly go to the gym. My friends and I have formed a paintball team and we travel around the Midlands competing in various tournaments.

I have been an active member of the Air Training Corps, taking part in numerous activities, including flying and shooting events, as well as memorial parades and charity fundraising. This gave me a chance to interact with my local community and was very enjoyable.

University is the next logical step for me. It will give me the opportunity to learn more about a subject that holds my interest. There is so much to learn and understand, and I cannot wait to continue with my education. This degree will enable me to become proficient in the fascinating, ever changing world of computing and I cannot wait to start.
