Mathematics Personal Statement Example 7

'Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas'. Mathematics is the language of reason, an expression of logic that makes sense of the world through numbers rather than words or feelings. Its' simple ability to explain the most complex problems with concrete proof makes it the purest of all sciences. Mathematics appears everywhere and can be applied to a near infinite number of situations. Take the Fibonacci numbers for example, they occur all throughout nature. The amazing fact that the ratio of two successive Fibonacci numbers converge to the golden ratio of, approximately, 1.618 can be no coincidence. To me, mathematics is the most fascinating of all intellectual disciplines. Not only is it exciting, but is also integral to the development of the modern world. As mathematicians, we have an opportunity to make a lasting contribution to society by helping to solve problems in such diverse fields as medicine and engineering.

I have studied mathematics for as long as I can remember, yet it has never failed to captivate me. Given my aptitude and enthusiasm for the subject, my choice of studying it at university was never in doubt. The A-level syllabus has been thoroughly enjoyable allowing me to achieve three A grades thus far. I have particularly enjoyed the emphasis placed upon calculus, my favourite branch of mathematics. I was delighted to find that calculus is an integral part of the degree course and relish the opportunity to study it further. At my college, the opportunity to study Further Mathematics was, unfortunately, unavailable. I therefore felt it necessary to work through the syllabus in my own time, along with various STEP papers. I feel that by covering this material, I will be better equipped to tackle higher level mathematics. I am also representative for mathematics at my college. This role has given me an increased responsibility and allowed me to develop communicational skills at regular meetings with members of staff. I am also studying Biology and Psychology at A2 level. I have thoroughly enjoyed the content of both subjects thus far, particularly the statistical elements involved. Despite the apparent large scientific content of my education, I have always felt it necessary to maintain equilibrium in my studies, which is why I chose to study English Language and Literature up to AS level. I have always achieved highly in this subject as I see it as more of a hobby than an academic endeavour. It allows me to free myself of logical thought at times and embrace my creative side, something that I place highly on my priority list.

Outside of the educational environment I have a passionate interest in theatre and film. I regularly attend my local theatre, my favourite production being Harold Pinter's Death of a Salesman. I was also given a fantastic opportunity to direct an adaptation of A Streetcar Named Desire by Tennessee Williams in my local community. My role in this production allowed me to develop my communication and listening skills. This is a hobby I would love to pursue further at University. I also play various musical instruments to a high standard. Of course, there is a connection between mathematics and music. Some composers, including Mozart, have applied the Fibonacci numbers and the golden ratio to their music. This is something I, myself, have previously tried.

I look forward to the independent lifestyle university will offer me, and the opportunity to meet and interact with fellow students from all over the world. I am sure the main question in your mind is: Why do you want to study mathematics? Well, it's for the simple fact that Maths is radical! No pun intended.
