wow-I think it's a really nice idea to show people what the whole Uni process is like and what is involved. I'd have found it really usefull.
Only suggestion I can make is a kind of calender showing all the official deadlines and rough ideas of when you should start looking at Unis, thinking about loans etc- just a checklist of where you should be throughout the year.

Oh its really not the end of the world. Feels dissapointing but certainly there are more important things in life than A-level results. I would definately advise you to make sure you choose a course you really enjoy, if you decide to go through clearing don't accept any old course you just because its at a great sounding university. The next three years will be dedicated to studying a subject you chose, so make sure it's one you love, especially if you decide to do a Masters/PhD :) I suggest think about taking a year out and reapply, with you your great grades you'll get into a great uni (might not be oxbridge) but a London university is just as good and good fun! If you take a year out have you thought about travelling and learning about life and culture.....? :)

Congratulations on your brilliant results, feel proud and remember just because things didn't go to your plan, it doesn't mean something even greater is not planned for you by something greater than us all!

To the last commenter, your right, some parts of the site are hard to read, and many pages could do with a general tidying up. However I only have a limited amount of time, and I think it is more important at the moment to try and get new information up here rather that make the existing stuff look pretty.

I will get round to it eventually though. With regards to photos or pictures, I can't have any unless I take them myself for copyright reasons, and seeing as I don't have a digital camera I can't take my own so sorry about that.

Applying for Law at Higher Tier UK Universities by legalbeagle at 10:22:31 12/09/2004

I just want to inform any potential law applicants about the ridiculous level of competition for places on this course. Although I'm sure you're all well aware of this fact already (because of the current trend in grade inflation)I for one was stunned (admitting an arrogance of sorts) when I received four rejections for my chosen course after a plethora of extra curricular achievements and work experience, a good personal statement, ten A*'s and four A's. It really can be a destabilising experience when you have confidence in your ability to achieve great heights. I just want to make sure that all others applicants don't go into the process with the complacent mindset that I had - remember that in life, nothing is certain!

I'm a Year 13 student who currently has an offer to Oxford for this September, but I really doubt that I'm going to get the AAA needed (especially as my History teacher suggested that I may get a 'U' in a module, which is the course I plan to do!). I just wanted to write to thank you for writing the Application Diary. I'm really sorry that you just missed the grades for Oxford, but reading about how you got through that and went through clearing and still got into a good university really rather inspired me. I'm thinking that missing the Oxford place wouldn't be the end of the world after all (sounds a bit churlish of me to say that!). THANK YOU. And all the best with the rest of your university career!

THIS IS NOT TRUE: BE WARNED by guest at 11/02/2007 23:12:45

Probably because you're half like that yourself. Probably because you're from a grammar school, whose pupils, along with public schools at a hefty 50% constitute nearly 90% of the student body. Add to this chinese scientists here, a lot of whom come from comprehensive schools (so clever that a grammar/public school is not required) and the classic inner city black student (handy for when pictures are being taken for the new prospectus), then you have a VERY small number of people who are truly down to earth. If you are a down to earth white comprehensive school student, probably about 0.5%, probably less, of the student population, BE WARNED - you will be proud that you made it, but is it worth a happy life surrounded by like-minded people? Just had to respond so that you're not deluded by the original review.

Report

Comment by guest at 04/10/2007 18:52:03

I like your statement. As has been said before, it has a good flow, accounts well for you personal experience and gives a pretty good sense of the kind of person you are.
But I also agree with some of the negative comments that have been made. Although it is hard not to fall into clichés, as all those aspiring to medical careers probably have close to the same motivations, your statement does seem rather hypocritical. In reading it attentively, one can see that you are rather proud of your accomplishments, which certainly isn't anything to be ashamed of, but you account for your life with a certain arrogance, paying more attention to what you might take from the people you attend, such as experience and qualities, rather than the satisfaction of giving to others, healing, and supporting the patients you might have cared for.
Therefore I am not certain that you as a person would enjoy persuing a career in medicine, where the purpose of your life is attending to those of others.
All the same I wish you luck in your futur.

firstly, the intro was far too big headed... you do not start off your personal statement bragging about your grades! Secondly, who needs to know that your a spoilt brat and clearly have rich mummy and daddy to pay for you to travel around the world?! So what? Clearly your a snob, maybe you will get in to oxford or cambridge, but you will never have values as you bum your self way too hard.
other than that, well done mate.

I must agree with one of the above comments: the statements here appear to be written in an obsequeous manner, desperately emphasising and flogging their historical knowledge and not actually displaying any personality or unique aptitudes. I have found these quite helpful in terms of structure but the actual content is fairly poor.

I had this checked over and received help from the best teacher in the school. So everything in it is decent, but please offer a comment telling me how to make it better, because an inferior opinion of a hopeless year 13 will really count to me.

Personal statement by 2kgitz at 26/10/2009 20:53:36

English personal statement

From a very early age, I have always had an extremely vivid imagination, so I believe that my passion for writing stemmed from the fact that it became my outlet and allowed me the freedom to truly express myself. Growing up the subjects I wrote about vastly changed along with my subject preference in literature, from short stories about thrilling adventures as I ventured into the realms of Enid Blyton and The Famous Five, to magical stories after immersing myself into Roald Dahl’s fantasy world. I am also fascinated by the way that literature can influence people with its ability to make people think and expand their imaginations as books are open to the reader’s personal interpretation. I am an avid reader and I have read a wide selection of poetry and novels from different genres and periods however, I particularly enjoy nineteenth century poetry such as the work of Sylvia Plath, a few of my favourite poems written by her are ‘The Bee meeting’, ‘Morning Song’ and ‘Tulips’. The reason why I love these poems is because I believe that they truly highlight Plath’s own vulnerability and I think that they reflect the true influence that the English language can encompass on peoples emotions. For as long as I can remember, I have always viewed Helen Forrester as an exquisite author, and ever since reading her volumes of autobiography, I have thought of her as a huge inspiration to me as I believe that the way she writes about her tragic past experiences during World War 2, so humbly and without any bitterness or regret, truly helps me put my own life into perspective and realise how much I have to be thankful for.

I am aware that their are also many people in this world that don’t have many things to be thankful for, and for many years I have been dedicated to trying to change this. Throughout my school years I was a member of our Amnesty International group where we planned many fundraisers to try and raise money which would go towards helping to protect the human rights of people less fortunate than us, I also participated in various fundraising activities from ‘sponsored walks’ to ‘cake sales’ to raise money for various charities. I believe that my willingness and participation in these activities truly reflects my kind and giving nature. In School I also keenly participated in a Creative Writing course, I feel that I learnt a lot from this course, mainly how to reign in my emotions and feelings and then convey them through different forms of writing.

My choice of diverse subjects for A-level supported my aspirations to further my knowledge and understanding in all different aspects of education. Alongside English Literature and Language, I chose to study Biology because I wanted to learn about life itself, particularly the origin of the world. I think that studying the Sciences, absolutely compliments my study of English as my studies in the sciences acquainted with the facts and figures, whilst studying English meant that I dealt with rather more emotional topics. I am also extremely interested in the study of the society that we live in and also the effect that today’s Media has on the public, this led me to study Media Studies at A-level where I valuably learnt to analyse a variety of different texts and also to further my studies on the subject, I seized the opportunity to study AS Citizenship this year, which I find extremely interesting and thoroughly enjoy being given the chance to debate a matter, I particularly enjoy this as I believe that like English, the subject is open for peoples personal opinions and interpretations.

Outside of college, I take pleasure in a variety of pursuits. These include reading, writing, shopping, socialising with my friends and listening to music. I also enjoy photography as I believe that along with writing, it is another way to translate my emotions and feelings in a visible way that people can see and relate to. I also participate in a photography course whilst at college to pursue my passion.

I have never felt as passionate and enthusiastic about another subject, as I do for English. I have always been completely captivated by the subject and it is a great source of enjoyment to me, and this is why I want to take my passion to the next level and study English at degree level. I am eager to gain more knowledge and understanding on this wonderful subject and I truly believe that I would be a great asset to your university.

Business Personal statement by bosslady09 at 08/11/2009 19:48:45

Today the world revolves around business, but in order to do well in this sector you have to achieve the right training and skills to be an affluent business person.
From an early age, I knew I wanted to become successful in life. This in turn influenced my passion for business studies. Business is a dynamic and challenging subject which I love; it has enabled me to develop a critical understanding of how organisations work.

Watching programmes like the apprentice and dragon’s den has showed me how competitive this industry is, and encourages me to aim higher so I can become a big time entrepreneur like Richard Branson one day. Seeing my mum working up the business ladder; from the bottom where she started up her own business in my grandma’s spare room, to finally opening her own hair and beauty salon that has now been lucratively running for less than ten years, has influenced how I feel about starting up my own business in the future. Having a part-time job in an established, privately owned retail company has given me more knowledge about working at different levels of a business. I see myself contributing to the growth of good business practice in a few years’ time and leading successful projects.

Despite having only picked up business at the A-level stage, my education has not only reinforced my ambitions but also given me the relevant knowledge to exceed most of my competition. Having chosen my A-level subjects with business in mind, textiles and sociology were my other options. Sociology is a very interesting subject which has a big impact on society and business pays a big role in society. Textiles is a creative and innovative subject that allows me to devise new ideas at a competitive level.

I have acknowledged the demanding requirements of university, yet I am ambitious to reach my full potential. I would describe myself as a reliable, honest and hardworking person, who is keen to gain skills to strengthen my status in the business world. I know it is going to be difficult yet I am up for the challenge

Read my PS please - having problems loading it on by mfgomez at 29/11/2009 16:12:44

De lega lata and de lege ferenda is Latin for what the law is and what the law ought to be. These questions come into my head, many times. This passion for the law, started from an early stage of my life when in 1996 my brother was murdered and the defendant was convicted for the offence of manslaughter. It made me think about what the law is and how it works. I started to read and examine cases of a similar nature and why this man wasn‘t charged with a more serious offence of murder. However, the understanding and truth of the law came clear to me on why such cases like these occurred and why people are charged with particular offences instead of what we think the law ought to be. Even though it was a devastating time in my life, it also gave me direction and ambition to pursue a career in law. The passion went on further when I started to read books and watch documentaries on miscarriages of justice such as The Guildford four (which I found to be an inspiration) and about notorious serial killers.

At school, I did not have the opportunity to study law and at college, I decided to do business as at that time I thought that it would be a good career path for me. After leaving college with just a pass in my vocational a level in business, I knew that the only subject for me was law. In 2007, I became a single mum. Being a mum has given me many of the social skills and experiences I have achieved. It has made me more terminined that ever before. In 2008 I started doing an AS level in law. As a single mother, I was not able to go to college again to do these qualifications, so instead I attended evening school in order to be a mum as well as being a part-time student. I completed the course and did not achieve the grade I was capable of; this was due to the disappointment that the evening school not running the A2 & other family matters. As the A2 course did not run, I could not complete the A level. However, my knowledge and love of the subject has expanded as now I have other understandings of different concepts and stems of the law. Not only do I have broader knowledge of criminal law I also find law of tort fascinating and the procedures of the English legal system intriguing.
I decided to start an AS in Psychology while I waited for the evening school to run the A2 law. As soon as I started the course, I was hooked. I found it fascinating with all the theories and research studies into memory, with the multi-store model, attachments with Bowlby’s continuity hypothesis, conformity and obedience with Milgram and Zimbardo. It made me look at things in a completely different light, it also gave me some understanding of why people behaviour the way the do. With this I understood more about criminals and why some committed the crimes they did. Being a determined and so dedicated to my studies a completed the AS with a grade B and continuing to do well in the A2 with the core subjects of relationships and aggression. As well as doing my A2 in psychology I had the opportunity to start my A2 law but unfortunately the AQA specification had changed which meant my AS results were not valid. So now I am undertaking my AS and A2 law at the same time. I find this a challenge but I do enjoy and strive on this challenge and I am doing well in all three qualifications achieving Bs for all my law homework’s and activities.

I do not have that many hobbies as my spear time is taken up with being a parent and my studies, but I do enjoy rock climbing and go once a week. Rock climbing is a very challenging sport which you require inner strength and real determination. This sport has helped me face my fears, to be strong and to never give up it has given me a lot of confidence, which I had little of and now I have great confidence in public speaking and giving presentations.
A unique point I have is that I speak two languages fluently. Obviously, my first language is English but I can also read, write, speak and have an understanding of Spanish. With this I would like to expand my knowledge of international law as I think I can benefit from this.

Completing my A levels would be a goal achieved, one of many. The next goal in my life is going to university and completing a degree. As a self-motivated, hard working and dedicated in everything I put my mind to, I know I can gain the degree I have always wanted. In the future, I want to become a forensic psychologist, but I do want to expand my knowledge through the degree on Family and international law.

Landscape Architecture personal statement by chipper at 11/12/2009 09:37:49

I first realized I wanted to pursue a career in landscape architecture during a trip to Europe in the eleventh grade. Barcelona, in particular, caught my attention with its pedestrian friendly layout, vibrant “La Ramble” and the easy access to parks, cathedrals, markets, and restaurants, on foot or by transit. As is the case with the atmosphere of most locations, it is never just one aspect that sets it apart, but the sum of all its components that makes that place special. Since that formative first trip I have returned to Europe again (Austria and the Czech Republic) and remain fascinated by its rich variety and the efficiency of its urban history. These experiences have persuaded me to constantly look at every aspect of the urban environment and ponder my potential contribution it.
My passion in life has always been to draw, and my background in visual arts has helped prepare me for the rigors of an MLA degree at the University of British Columbia. My concentration in drawing and photography has provided me with both the technical and artistic skills and insights to be able to excel in this program. Most of my undergraduate work has explored issues surrounding cognitive science, psychology, and philosophy of mind as they relate our objective and subjective realities. In many explorations, ethical and philosophical issues are raised surrounding societal conventions (laws, religion, moral panic) and how easily those conventions can spin out of control. In the realm of urban design and landscape architecture, I think it is important to address both the aesthetic and psychological needs of the population being served. Thus I feel these interests are helpful in addressing how people will interact with their immediate surroundings.
Besides visual arts I also have a diverse interest in geography, philosophy, climatology, music, exotic flora, and traveling. During my undergraduate degree I took twelve credits in philosophy of mind and now reflect upon the theories of David Chalmers, Daniel Dennett, and Hilary Putnam (among others) as source material for my artistic practice.
In terms of work experience, I have participated in, and organized, numerous gallery exhibitions, doing everything from judging applicants’ work, to promotions, to curating the shows. Additionally, my summer work experience in both irrigation and landscaping has given me an appreciation for, and understanding of, the labor, materials and technology that go into make every design a reality.
For me, the University of British Columbia presents the opportunity to work at the cutting edge of urban design, landscape urbanism and sustainable, green design. My primary interest is in green urban design and UBC has an excellent focus in this area. Daniel Roehr, with his participation in the “Greenskins Lab” as well as his focus on visual representation and fieldtrips abroad, make him a highly desirable professor to work with. Green building facades and roofs are one of the most intriguing and sustainable ways to improve air quality in cities. The fact that UBC has a significant research centre focused on such initiatives makes the SALA stand out among its peers. Susan Herrington is another professor of interest, specifically because of her interdisciplinary nature (architecture, environmental design, landscape architecture) and her research on the psychological effects of space. I hope to work with these and other faculty during my time at UBC.
As alluded to in my opening statement, I have a passion for travel and I expect that while at the SALA I will participate in either a year-long exchange program, study abroad summer course or international internship program.
Considering that more than half the world’s population now lives in cities, it will be up to the designers of the built environment to ensure that the results of this mass migration do not end in misery and catastrophe. I believe urban design and landscape architecture need to function as catalysts for a more sustainable urban framework, as well as an aesthetic end in and of themselves. Interdisciplinary and collaborative efforts with others should be encouraged to help facilitate greater unity, functionality and environmentalism in our cities. I intend to play my part in this urban revolution in several ways. After my MLA, subsequent internship years and LARE exam, I hope to pursue a PhD in Design or Urban Design. I then intend to start my own interdisciplinary design and creative firm merging landscape, planning, urban design, architecture, art, graphics, and furniture. The founding principals of such a practice would be environmental sustainability, pushing aesthetic boundaries and facilitating the ever-improving, holistic connection of people to their immediate surroundings: spaces designed for the population, not for the designer. I also intend to return to academia at some point to teach at the either the graduate or undergraduate level after a sufficient amount of professional experience and literary publications in the field.
While such a plan may seem both ambitious and subject to change, the basic premise of improving the human experience and our understanding of that experience is my unifying, grounding ambition. I find that our most tangible experiences are the physical and sensorial ones, and it is with this knowledge and ambition in mind that I intend pursue an MLA degree at the University of British Columbia.
